Master your mind with effective brain training techniques

Do you ever struggle to recall someone’s name that you’ve just met? Walk into a room and forget why you’re there?

We all do it to some degree, but it’s not uncommon to feel like your mind isn’t as sharp as it once was. Studies have found that working memory declines with age, and people will more frequently forget to perform planned tasks.

However, there may be things you can do to give your mind a good workout and keep it as sharp as possible for as long as possible. For some expert insight, we spoke to Bron wen Sciortino, a Motivational Speaker and Author at SheIQ.

The importance of training your mind

Before diving into her tips, Bronwen stressed just how normal it is to struggle with memory loss – then shared the good news.

“The good news is that your brain is like a muscle – you can train it. Through simple, daily exercises, you can improve how you remember things,” she said.

Not only are the exercises simple, they may make a real difference to your everyday life.

“By focusing on key activities that engage your mind, your recall gets sharper, and your confidence grows. Training your brain isn’t just for the young – it’s for anyone who wants to stay sharp, focused, and connected to the world around them,” added Bronwen.

Bronwen’s techniques for enhancing recall & sharpening your mental activity

Bronwen offers four expert techniques for enhancing your recall, boosting your problem-solving, and sharpening your mental activity. They don’t require hours of your time or any special tools, but simply spending a little bit of time on them every day.

Sharpening your mental activity

“Your brain needs regular exercise to stay sharp,” says Bronwen.

And this time, it’s one of those rare occasions when it’s not easier said than done. In fact, most of it is quite fun.

Engage in activities like puzzles, crosswords, or even learning a new skill. These challenges keep your mind flexible and ready to take on new information,” she explains.

“By keeping your brain engaged, you’ll help it stay in shape, just like you do with your body. Simple activities like reading or playing cards can make a big difference. Your memory grows stronger when your mind stays busy.”

Getting enough sleep to boost problem-solving and critical thinking

If you’ve ever needed an excuse to get more sleep, consider this your sign. Like Bronwen says, “your mind deserves attention, just like the rest of your body.”

“While you rest, your brain processes and stores new information. Without enough sleep, it’s harder for your brain to hold onto details. Make sure you aim to get 7-8 hours each night. A well-rested brain is more alert, focused, and better at remembering.”

Use visualisation

Need an easy tip to help you be that person who always remembers someone’s name (AKA the cheat code to impress everyone in the room)?

“One way to strengthen recall is by turning words into pictures in your mind. When you meet someone new, imagine their name written on their shirt or face.”

But wait, there’s more! This tip works for anything you need to remember.

“If you need to remember a list, create a visual story that connects each item. This taps into the brain’s natural way of storing information. You’ll find it easier to bring up details when you can see them clearly in your mind,” explains Bronwen.

Repeat to improve recall and retention

A classic study technique students use to help them remember important information is repetition. Whether it be by using flash cards or reciting the periodic table, repeating new information can be one of the best ways to help information sink in.

“Repetition is key to locking in memories. When you learn something new, say it out loud or write it down a few times. Repeat it to yourself throughout the day. By revisiting information regularly, you create stronger pathways in your brain, making recall easier. The more often you go over a name or a fact, the deeper it sticks.”
